UBV magnitudes and color indices have been obtained during a continuous 4-year monitoring program. The main results are as follows: (1) A proposed variation on a time scale of about 8 days with an amplitude of B = 0.37 was confirmed. (2) During the period of 1980 - 1982, OJ 287 was stable. The authors recorded an outburst of B = 14m.25 in March 1983. (3) An optical light curve for the period 1968 - 1984, constructed from all published photographic data shows evidence for the existence of an optical variation with larger amplitude (ΔB = 1m.25 - 4m.00) and a long time scale (2 - 4 years) except the variability on a time scale of about 8 days with an amplitude of ΔB = 0m.37.
