The significance of this study is that it examines the potential of optical interferometry to establish the dimensions of objects unresolvable by ordinary telescopes. The operation of this kind of interferometer would also provide information about atmospheric properties, of use both for interferometry and for other purposes. Throughout, the analysis takes explicit account of all the relevant atmospheric properties, and evaluates numerical examples using reasonable estimates of these properties.
