The optical positions of 41 late-type stars associated with microwave maser line emission have been determined with the Bordeaux meridian circle with respect to the FK5 system of equinox and equator J 2000.0. In several cases, more than 30 individual measurements were made. In several cases, more than 30 individual measurements were made. In all cases the accuracy is expected to be about + or - 0.05 arcsec. For 18 other late-type stars with negative declinations, the ESO 1 m Schmidt survey plates was used to obtain coordinates relative to the Perth 70 star catalog. The standard deviations lie in the range 0.15 to 0.30 arcsec in general. The 55 stars measured in this work are evenly distributed over the celestial sphere. It is argued that late-type stars with maser line emissions (OH, H2O or SiO) in their circumstellar shells have the potential to link the fundamental optical frames to the quasi-inertial extragalactic VLBI frame.
