Optical linear polarization maps in two wavebands are presented for Hubble's variable nebula, NGC 2261. The data confirm that NGC 2261 is a reflection nebula illuminated throughout by the star R Mon. Across the head of the cometary nebula and including R Mon is a band of polarization that is produced by extinction by aligned grains rather than simple scattering. It is suggested that there is an equatorial disc around R Mon and that dust grains within are aligned by a toroidal magnetic field which is a trapped remnant of the field within the cloud out of which R Mon formed.
