An optical linear polarization map is presented for M43 and the dark lane that appears to divide it from M42. Within M43 the map shows the characteristic centrosymmetric pattern of a nebula illuminated by a central star. The change in polarization pattern in the dividing lane indicates that the dust within it permeates both nebulae rather than forming a foreground obscuration. A region of high polarization (about 20 per cent) on the NE periphery of M43 has been identified.
