The paper reports the results of photometric observations of the optical counterpart of the massive X-ray binary 4U1700-37, made at ESO (Walraven VBLUW) and SAAO (UBVRI) in 1981 and 1982. Combining these data with previously published photometry an orbital period for this system of 3.41168 + or 0.00009 d is derived, in agreement with the X-ray period (Branduardi et al., 1978). The average light curve is double waved, but shows large deviations from the symmetry expected for purely ellipsoidal light curves. Color variations are detected from the Walraven data, which are correlated with the brightness variations, as expected for a tidally and rotationally distorted star. The presence of the previously reported long-term periodic modulation of the shape of the light curve (P = 32.5 days) which has been interpreted as evidence for a precessing accretion disk in 4U1700-37 (Cherepashchuk and Khruzina, 1982) is not confirmed by the present analysis.
