Thirty rocket experiments and several satellite experiments involving the observation of artificial clouds in the upper atmosphere have been carried out during 1980-1991 using TV systems, and spectral and photographic equipment. Particular attention is given to methods and instrumentation for the analysis of 2D images with subsequent reconstruction of the structure of artificial clouds using optical thermography. The main processes occurring in artificial clouds are clarified on the basis of experimental and model data on their optical parameters.
