We propose to use the WFC on board of HST to carry out V and I broad-band imaging of the radio-quiet galaxies recently discovered at redshift z=3.4 in the field of QSO 0000-2619. These galaxies are members of the most distant cluster ever observed. We propose to study the morphology and light distribution of the Lyman-alpha galaxy at z=3.428 (G2) discovered by Macchetto et al. (1993, ApJ, Feb. 15), which is the highest redshift radio-quiet galaxy known. In the same field, two more galaxies at approximately z=3.4 have been identified in the broad-band color survey of Steidel and Hamilton (1992, AJ, in press), and four more candidate primeval galaxies at the same redshift have been identified by us with ground based telescopes. We propose to observe this field using the F555W and F814W filters for a total exposure time of 4 hours in each filter. The high spatial resolution attainable with HST will allow us to study the morphology and light profiles of these objects on kpc scales, and make detailed comparisons with their present-epoch counterparts. These deep images will help us to discriminate between two models proposed in Macchetto et al. for G2, namely a truly primaeval galaxy undergoing its first major burst of star formation or a Seyfert 2 galaxy dominated by emission from the nucleus. Furthermore, these high resolution data will highlight any morphological peculiarities due to, e.g., the presence of close companions, ongoing mergers
