With the current science comissioning of the Allen Telescope Array, we have the first opportunity to conduct a wide-field radio transient survey with real-time transient detection and significant limiting fluxes. The FiGSS survey on the ATA will detect 1-1000 radio transients in semester 2008B. Optical/NIR follow-up of these sources is critical for understanding their nature. Early surveys indicate that many of the transients discovered by FiGSS may be low mass flare stars and supernovae/gamma-ray bursts, but many transients cannot be easily identified with known phenomena. Photometry will show associations with stellar or galactic objects with broad-band SEDs, helping to identify the nature of the objects and calculate rates. The images will also allow us to obtain spectroscopy with other resources to identify the objects and determine the redshifts of the transients. We request follow-up of 12 transients, which will overcome Poisson statistics in rate calculations and is a reasonable estimate of the number of transients to be discovered by the ATA in 2008B. This survey (with optical/NIR follow-up as part of a larger multi-wavelength follow-up program) is a precursor to other transient surveys conducted with future radio arrays such as the MWA, LOFAR, and SKA.
