The aim of the Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChaMP) is to amass and characterize a deep, wide-area sample of serendipitous X-ray sources detected by the Chandra X-ray observatory, for studies of the nature, evolution, and clustering of X-ray selected AGN and galaxies. Chandra's broadband X-ray sensitivity (0.3-8keV) means that our sample is far less affected by absorption than previous optical, UV, or soft X-ray surveys, and unlike radio surveys will allow the first complete census of the intrinsic population of AGN (not just the radio bright fraction). Chandra's ~arcsecond astrometry enables unambiguous identification of optical counterparts to X-ray sources 10-20 times fainter and with 10 times higher angular resolution than achieved by any X-ray observatory past or present. We propose here optical imaging and spectroscopy of a large sample of Chandra serendipitous sources, to provide the first estimate of the intrinsic luminosity function of AGN and its evolution, and thereby the history of accretion power in the universe. While the ChaMP emphasizes AGN, it will also enable a wide range of follow-up projects, from studies of stellar coronal emission, to cluster evolution and cosmology.
