Pedersen et al. (1984) have observed optical flashes to come from the direction of the very small error box associated with the unusual 5 March 1979 gamma-ray burst event. The authors report here an optical flash background study which uses similar instrumentation. Their data were obtained simultaneously on two telescopes (separated by 101 km) which were pointing parallel at a random region of the sky. 49 flash events in a total of 230.1 hours of observing were detected. During 77.6 hours of simultaneous data, none of the 20 flashes was detected by both telescopes. The background events are found to be dominated by meteors and satellites passing through the field-of-view. The background flash rate found is applicable to Pedersen et al. 0.023 events per hour. No precedent for the morphology of the 1984 February 8 flash reported by Pedersen et al. is found.
