The optical constants of solid organic refractory (o.r.) residues are given in the range from 0.115 to 1.7 μm, both for as-deposited residue and after processing by 10eV photons and 3keV He+ ions. Processing changes the optical constants in a manner characteristic of heat processing of amorphous carbon films. From this behaviour, a set of optical constants is derived for the amount of processing expected in one diffuse medium cycle. These optical constants are compared with the ad hoc values used in current interstellar dust modelling and to the values of different kinds of (hydrogenated) amorphous carbon used for that purpose.
