Optical and soft X-ray (0.1-2.0 keV) data of a rare, EUV-selected Seyfert 1 galaxy, RE J2248-511, are presented. Fits to the soft X-ray spectrum suggest that either (a) this AGN has been viewed through a `hole' in the local Galactic column density (N_H<10^20 cm^-2) or (b) RE J2248-511 exhibits a strong ultrasoft X-ray excess below ~0.25 keV. The EUV (0.09-0.21 keV) count rate inferred from new pointed ROSAT PSPC data is twice that originally measured by the Wide Field Camera during the ROSAT All-Sky Survey and, in scenario (b), suggests an ultrasoft X-ray excess which was substantially weaker during the All-Sky Survey observation. The soft X-ray flux also weakens by 14 per cent during the pointed PSPC observation (a time-scale of 16h), but there are no significant spectral changes.
