Photometric, spectrophotometric and polarimetric data of the near infrared emission region in Cep-A are presented. This region is shown to be an infrared reflection nebula illuminated by a central source near the position of the H2O-maser spots. The extinction in front of this object rises steeply from east to west obscuring the central source by less than 75 mag. The steep extinction gradient determines the western edge of the reflection nebula, while the eastern edge is radiation limited. The optical depth along the axis of the bi-polar CO-mass outflow is relatively low. Nevertheless the spectral distribution of the radiation escaping into this direction shows (after scattering) deep 3.1 micron and 10 micron features. The supposed Herbig-Haro object GGD37 and the extended infrared source near this nebula are argued to be physically associated to this complex. A long-slit coude-spectrum of GGD37 obtained in the red reveals high velocity dispersions of at least 300 km/s, indicating powerful dynamical processes going on in this region. The relative strength of the forbidden line of S II 6717, 6731 lines compared to H-alpha and the forbidden line of N II suggests shock-excitation.
