Using a specially developed radiative hydrodynamic code, the compatibility between the dust fluences recorded by detectors on Giotto and Vega, the rate of deceleration of the Giotto spacecraft encounter, and a set of pre and postperihelion spectra of Halley extending from near to far infrared wavelengths are examined. It is proposed that the average coma dust distribution is well represented by the envelope of those deducible from the fluences of the VEGA and Giotto probes. Implications of this suggestion are quantitatively investigated.
