Three large astronomical instruments, the 6-m optical reflector and the 576-m RATAN 600 radio telescope in the Northern Caucasus of the Soviet Union and the 305-m radio telescope at Arecibo, Puerto Rico, are discussed. A comparison is made between the sensitivities of the RATAN 600 and Arecibo facilities and between those of the 6-m reflector and the Palomar 200-in. reflector. The possibilities of using the facilities to search for extra-solar planets and extra-terrestrial intelligence are considered.
