A model governing the evolution of a large amplitude magnetosonic wave is applied to coronal and interplanetary conditions, with the aim to investigate the starting frequencies and the onset times of metric and kilometric type II bursts. The results are compared with the statistical properties of a sample of metric type II bursts and the associated flares.
