One-wavelength calculations were compared with full-flux calculations in order to better understand the limitations and uncertainties of the results when only the wavelength was used. Comparisons were made for a standard atmosphere without aerosols. The case of a standard atmosphere with tropospheric and stratospheric aerosols was studied. Calculations at a wavelength of 0.55 micrometers shown to overestimate Rayleigh scattering, with the best agreement occurring at 0.57 micrometers. The wavelength which gives the best agreement with the full-flux calculation (including Rayleigh scattering gaseous absorption) varied greatly with solar zenith angle, surface albedo, and height for each flux component.
