We construct, in topological 4D gravity with torsion, a set of observables involving the topological invariant given by integrating the Nieh Yan (NY) 4-form. The method relies as usual on the determination of a hierarchy of generalized descent equations based on the BRST algebra. The latter is derived by using a superconnection for a SO(5) gauge group. This and its associated supercurvature lead to the fields occurring in the quantized theory by exploiting an appropriate embedding of SO(4) into SO(5).
