Davies' test, based on the phase-dispersion minimization method, is applied to some example situations to demonstrate that it can only be employed in a limited manner. Two simulations are described in which 500 artifical data sets are generated under the null hypothesis of no periodicity to illustrate the statistical properties of Davies' test when the period is fixed and when a search for the period is conducted. It is shown that the test cannot be used to test periods that are identified by conducting a period search of the data. A nonparametric randomization test is recommended as a suitable alternative test for periodicity.
