Consideration is given to the use of a running mean as a filter to remove unwanted low frequency components in original ionospheric data, where the intention is to apply power spectrum analysis to the data. It is shown that, effectively, amplitude distortion will be introduced in general, and this distortion carries through the power spectrum analysis to give results which may be misinterpreted as real effects.
