Solar Flares: Sunspots, Solar Flares: Evolution

Scientific paper

Using chromospheric, magnetographic, X-ray and radio data an analysis is made of the evolution of an area on the solar surface which produced against the background of an extremely low level of sunspot activity, a large flare on 23 August 1988. A rationale is presented for the inference that the flare was produced by a longlived complex of activity (CA) during a temporal decline of sunspot activity there. It is pointed out that the flare was preceded by the disappearance of the sunspot radio source. Flare activations covered the entire CA core, and after the flare a new CA branch was formed.
