Monte Carlo simulations that quantify the uncertainties in CCD imaging observations of AGN host galaxies are presented. The principal difficulties encountered in undertaking such observations are outlined, and the analysis techniques used by researchers to partially overcome them are summarized. Artificial surface brightness profiles constructed in order to simulate actual observations to quantify the random and systematic error inherent in deriving host galaxy properties from surface brightness profiles are described. It is suggested that a series systematic effect may be unaccounted for in at least some of the surveys, and one possible candidate is presented. If confirmed, these results would imply that the hosts of radio-loud quasars are substantially more luminous than those of bright radio galaxies, in disagreement with the prediction of Grand Unified Schemes for AGN.
