This short review discusses at which energy the transition from Galactic to extra-galactic cosmic rays takes place, with emphasis on recent developments. In particular, it is proposed that the all-particle cosmic ray spectrum comprises only two components, one Galactic (e.g. supernovae) and one extra-galactic, and that the transition occurs at the second knee as a result of the presence of extra-galactic magnetic fields of moderate strength.
