An investigation is made into the dynamical evolution of gas protoclusters formed in the metagalactic medium during the active phase of the cosmogonic process as a result of supersonic collisions of large gas masses. Such protoclusters consist of layers of compressed and heated gas containing shear discontinuities and bounded by shock fronts propagating from the discontinuity. The instability of the shear discontinuity creates turbulence in the layer, and the violation of barotropy accompanying the propagation of the disturbances generated by the shear discontinuity results in the occurrence of a significant vorticity component of the internal motions. A theory of the instability of the shear discontinuity in the presence of inhomogeneity and nonbarotropy of the medium is constructed. The part played by viscosity in breaking up the shear discontinuity is considered. It is shown that the vortex motions that arise in the protocluster layer are strong enough to ensure rapid rotation of the protogalaxies formed by the fragmentation of the layer. Possible observational consequences of the vorticity of the protogalactic medium are discussed.
