The chemical composition of Type I supernova (SN I) envelopes is investigated. Identifications are provided for the absorption features observed in the spectra of SN I 1972e, 1971i, 1963j, 1968e, 1971l, and 1967c. Attention is given to physical properties of SN I envelopes, the different elements and groups of elements in SN I envelopes, the general problem of identifying absorption and emission features in SN I spectra, and the chemical composition and stratification of elements in SN I envelopes. It is concluded that: (1) the abundances of O, C, N, and S in SN I envelopes is significantly higher than the 'standard' stellar abundances; (2) the He abundance in such envelopes should also be very high; (3) stratification of elements occurs in SN I envelopes; and (4) O and C are situated mainly in the inner parts of the envelopes, N and He are located in the outer parts, and H is situated in the most superficial layers.
