The authors investigate the statistics of chance three-point alignments in random clustered and unclustered fields of points, and apply such analysis to two well-searched published quasar fields from the UK Schmidt telescope. They discuss the statistical detection limits for a sub-population of physically aligned triplets, and find no evidence (within the statistical limits) of such a population being present. In appendices the authors give formulae for boundary corrections in triplet searches, and an approximate expectation value for higher order alignments in random fields.
