In an effort to determine the nature of the agent(s) of the violet depression in N-type stars through the behavior of their Balmer decrement, slit spectrograms of three C and one C-S type long-period variables (all reported to have the violet depression) were repeatedly taken between 1983 May and 1984 November. The observed phase-related changes in the Balmer decrement of two of these stars exclude the possibility that the absorbers are exclusively dust and/or polyatomic molecules. The exact nature and number of kinds of opacity carriers remains to be determined.
