Many measurements of the distortion effects of the Sq and L2 currents in the group and phase heights of the E-region have been made at our field station near Melbourne (38 deg S). These distortions arise due to the J x B forces associated with the currents. In this paper we use a model Sq current density profile and a model E-region to determine the value of the E-region parameters required to best fit the experimental results. Using these parameters, we then determine the form of the L2 profile required to fit the experimentally obtained L2 data. The height and thickness of the two J profiles so determined are found to be different, but it is considered that these differences are not sufficient to explain the seasonal and solar cycle differences in the Sq and L2 magnetic variations observed at the ground.
