From January through May, 1991, a group of students of Astrophysics (Universidad Complutense de Madrid) have measured a collection of sunspots to study the relative size of sunspot umbrae. The measurement and reduction techniques are described. We used photographic techniques to determine the ratio of the size of the umbra over the size of the complete sunspot. Our result is 0.18+/-0.03 and it confirms previous determinations by other authors. We point out that the umbra-penumbra border may not appear properly on routine photographs, which may produce some sistematic error in the above mentioned ratio.
