We present calculations of the efficiency of magnetic braking in synchronously rotating magnetic binary systems, following the formulation of Li, Wu & Wickramasinghe. We show that, for the observed range of magnetic field strengths typical of AM Herculis binaries, the braking efficiency has been overestimated by a large factor in current models. Our calculations also show that the orbital evolution of the high-field AM Herculis binaries is driven by the loss of orbital angular momentum due to gravitational radiation rather than magnetic braking, if these are the oniy two competing mechanisms. Key words: binaries: close - stars: magnetic fields - novae, cataclysmic variables - stars: rotation - white dwarfs.
