All available data on the change of the surface density of quasars with limiting magnitude are discussed. A plate taken under excellent seeing conditions with the CFH 3.6 m telescope shows that all the faint UV excess objects found by Formiggini et al. (1980) are starlike. This contradicts the finding of Bonoli et al. (1980), that 2/3 of these objects are extended. The low surface densities obtained by Savage and Bolton (1979) and by Arp and Surdej (1981) are probably due to errors in the magnitude scales used. These surface densities show the expected flattening of the log N(less than B)/B curve starting at B of about 20.
