Solar coronal mass ejections are prominent example of interpenetrating particle streams with different properties: densities, speeds, temperature and composition. Such counterstreaming plasmas are quickly unstable leading to the excitation of the electrostatic and electromagnetic instabilities. Here it is shown that plasma instabilities of Weibel-type could offer plausible explanations for the origin of the two-dimensional magnetic field fluctuations observed in interplanetary space.
