The background of microwave radiation is known to be remarkably uniform over the sky, although the regions giving rise to the radiation in widely separated elements of solid angle have, according to the usual cosmological theories, always been out of communication with each other. Using a new approach to the big-bang cosmologies, an explanation of this uniformity is given. The intensity of the background appears to be related to the energy of conversion of hydrogen to helium within galaxies. Yet this circumstance is regarded as coincidental in the usual theories. Here it receives explanation.
