During periods of enhanced geomagnetic activity, various disturbances of the neutral and ionized upper atmosphere are observed. Here the origin of positive ionospheric storms is investigated. A storm for which neutral gas density measurements by the AEROS B satellite are available has been selected as an example. Using these density measurements as input into an ionosphere model, it is shown that the composition changes (perturbations of the O/N2 density ratio) are not sufficient to explain the storm effects. Equatorward-directed winds caused by either traveling atmospheric disturbances or changes in the large-scale wind circulation, or both, are a more likely explanation for the observed increase in the ionization density
