A gamma-ray burst (GRB) model is presented which accounts for the main observational features of such phenomena. It is noted that some GRB sources may be components in highly detached binaries, where there is no substantial transfer of matter. Interstellar gas accretion in the proposed model plays the role of an energy source, with gas density falling off rapidly with the distance from the galactic plane. GRBs must therefore be distributed in the galaxy within a 200-300 pc-width layer.
