On the assumption of a decentered magnetic dipole, models are constructed for 17 Ap stars for which the phase diagram of the effective magnetic field is known. This model involves the determination of the displacement of the dipole, the angle between the rotation axis and the line of sight, the angle between the rotation and magnetic axes, and a parameter determining the strength of the magnetic field. It is possible to determine these parameters quite accurately if the phase diagram of the mean surface magnetic field is also known. It is shown that, for a sample of 17 stars with theoretically predicted distribution functions, there is no evidence against randomly oriented magnetic axes in Ap stars.
