An analysis of four years of 500 mb height data unexpectedly reveals that the standing waves which are of planetary scale meridionally transport an amount of momentum comparable to that of transient waves. Evidence is presented to show that the statistics concerning the standing waves are difficult to determine accurately. These statistics are particularly sensitive to the errors which arise from the large gaps in the longitudinal distribution of existing radiosonde stations. Planetary waves may play a more important role in the troposphere than past investigations might tend to suggest.
