Scientific paper

We present results of an investigation into the behavior of the base of
the convective envelope of models of asymptotic giant branch stars
during third dredge-up. We find that the extent, and even the presence,
of third dredge-up depends critically on the treatment of convection
within a stellar structure calculation.
