Meteorites: Isotopic Abundances

Scientific paper

The nβ-process is re-investigated in relation to the Ca-Ti anomalies in the EK-1-4-1 inclusion of the Allende meteorite. Serious shortcomings in previous calculations are demonstrated, particularly those resulting from the neglect of (n, α) reactions. The authors conclude that the chances to explain these isotopic anomalies by the canonical nβ-process do not look promising. Even the more moderate solar 48Ca/46Ca ratio can hardly be obtained. However, it appears that additional uncertainties in several of the nuclear reaction rates have to be removed before one can rule out the nβ-process. In particular, the authors stress the importance of renewed evaluations of (n, γ) cross sections for neutron-rich nuclei near the neutron magic number 28.
