In addition to exhibiting complex Balmer and He I lines as well as low-excitation permitted and forbidden emission lines, the spectrum of RX Puppis is rich in sharp absorptions due essentially to neutral metals. Variations in the IR flux, a brightening in the visible, and radio data are also taken into account in an attempt to construct a physical model of RX Puppis with a central star (late B giant), an expanding envelope with high velocities, an almost stationary shell, and a dust shell (or ring).
