Mars-3 and Mars-5 magnetic field measurements were analyzed in a rotating system of coordinates whose axes are determined by the direction of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). This analysis shows that, in the vicinity of Mars, there is a region in which the direction of the measured magnetic field is not correlated with the direction of the transverse component of the IMF. The field in this region cannot be explained by the covering of an obstacle by IMF lines; rather, it is interpreted as an intrinsic field of Mars. Between this region and the bow wave, the distribution of magnetic field vectors corresponds to the covering model.
