An analysis of the principal mechanisms for the formation and evolution of lunar regolith glass particles is presented. An examination of the size distribution of lunar glasses indicates that the condensation of vapor created by the impact of a meteorite is not an important mechanism of particle formation. Particle sizes produced by the spraying of impact-melted material are more consistent with observation. It is shown that pools of magma formed by meteorite impact are not responsible for the formation of large particles. A simple model for the evolution of lunar surface material where a certain depth is assumed to be uniformly affected by systematic meteorite bombardment is proposed.
