Shock degassing was a major factor in releasing the gases present in planetesimals while the earth was in its accretion phase. The atmosphere was formed as the earth grew, and it was of the oxidizing type. As much as 30-45% may have been contributed on the earth by shock degassing and no less than 25-40% on Venus, but shock degassing played no appreciable role on Mars and Mercury.
