The problem of the experimental determination of the diffuse Xand gamma-ray background using intrinsically nondirectional detectors (i.e., scintillators and proportional counters) is examined. It is shown that the contributions due to the intrinsic background of the detector and to the emission from the surrounding material cannot usually be separated from the celestial background by purely experimental methods. Therefore, one of the contributions must be calculated or estimated in some way, or has to be regarded as null. Most of the long discussions concerning a number of results, especially in the MeV range, can be traced back to the above impossibility and to the difficulty of these estimates.
