Granular velocities determined from excellent quality solar spectra in two spectral lines are corrected for instrumental and atmospheric image degrading effects by the application of a modulation transfer function derived from the same material by comparing the observed brightness fluctuation spectra with various true spectra from the literature. k-omega spectra are used to separate granular and oscillatory fluctuations. The results favor a rather flat gradient with photospheric (C I 5380 line) rms granular velocities of at least 1.0 km/sec
