Simultaneous measurements of the electric field observed in the ionosphere above Malvern and St. Santin confirm that on disturbed days magnetospheric electric fields penetrate equatorwards as far as L equals 1.8. The observed attenuation of the field between L equals 2.6 and L equals 1.8 is steeper than expected for a simple uniform field in the equatorial plane and suggests that a shielding mechanism is still operating at these latitudes.
