From the classical Fourier expansion of the disturbing function for an asteroid under the effects of the 5:3 Jovian resonance (in the planar elliptic problem), a system of differential equations in (h, k) variables with periodic coefficients was constructed. This system was solved analytically using Baker's matricial method, and the characteristic exponents calculated. Results show the existence of an instability region (in the semi-major axis domain) around this resonance, even though it is smaller than the observed extension of the gap.
