This paper examines the stability of an electrically conducting gas rotating about the z-axis of a cylindrical polar coordinate system in the presence of an azimuthal magnetic field and subject to a spherically symmetric gravitational body force. Both axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric disturbances are considered, and three different irreversible processes are incorporated into the analysis, viz., diffusion of vorticity, magnetic flux, and heat. Attention is restricted to situations which are conceivably stable by assuming no decrease of the specific entropy in the vertical direction. Differential rotation and meridional gradients of the azimuthal magnetic field are taken as the two possible sources of instability in the system. The possibility of suppressing Goldreich-Schubert instability is reconsidered, instability promoted by magnetic buoyancy is investigated, and it is shown that such instability sets in when the fluid is sufficiently strongly stratified in a 'statically stable' manner. Applications to cases corresponding to the upper layers of the sun and the radiative interiors of stars are discussed. An appendix deals with the axisymmetric diffusive instability of toroidal magnetic fields in a rotating gas.
