A general method, based on a variational principle, is developed for the study of adiabatic oscillations in a gas cloud with negligible self-gravity, rotating in an external gravitational field. Second order virial equations are obtained. As an example, the formalism is applied to disk models with an equation of state wherein p is proportional to rho to the 4/3 power; such disks turn out to be unstable.
